Dealing with the stress in your life
 
Historically, middle-aged men have been more prone to have high blood pressure than women have. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption and lack of exercise lead more men to strokes than women. In fact about 3 of 5 stokes are suffered by men. Unhealthy habits seem to account for the difference between the two sexes. Here are some thoughts about how to manage stress
 
 
The Commute
 
Getting to work these days, particularly in the cities can and does take up to two hours for many adults. Between boredom and the need to stay alert, we have ample time to find reasons to feel anxious. Avoid adding stress by aggressive driving. ItÂ’s dangerous and stressful.
 
Instead, drive in the right lane. The few extra minutes you take will leave you feeling much more relaxed than if you spent the time weaving in an out of traffic hoping to move faster. Leave home 15 minutes earlier.
 
At Work
 
You have arrived at work, relaxed and ready to conquer the day. Review your plans for the day and keep your sight on your long-range goals. Maintaining a long view will help you deal with the day to day demands. If things feel like they are wearing you down, take a few deep breaths.
 
Try if possible to break away from work for a short walk or some exercise. Regular exercise can induce the release of endorphins that will lift your spirits and mood. It will also aid in pain relief/
 
Attitude
 
Smile! Smiling has an amazing effect both on your mood and on your body. It’s infectious and will lighten the mood around you.
 
Focus on the future, rather than on the past. People often fret over events they can no longer control. Learn from your mistakes, but move on.
 
Occasionally indulge yourself. You work hard. Take a nap or enjoy a modest piece of cake. Have sex regularly (safely of course).
 
Don’t let food become your stress relief. This can lead to over eating which in turn will create more stress.
 
Make time for you family and friends. Do for others. You’ll do good things and feel good about it as well. Keep things in perspective.
